If you have read many of my reviews, you’ll know that something that really impresses me is the ‘Geek Factor’. ‘Geek Factor’ in my eyes is hardware/software that is unique and fun. I’ve run into a few things for the Pocket PC that has really blown me away. PixFrame by Choung.Networks is one such program. Most people have a collection of travel pictures, family pictures or computer art that they keep on their PC. Maybe you use the screen saver slide show option to show the pictures off when you’re away from your PC. I keep mine on a flash drive, so I can update them when I want and not load the pictures on my PC at work. How would you like to turn your Pocket PC into a digital picture frame to display these pictures all the time? With PixFrame you can do just that. The pictures can be viewed with or without the time and calendar displayed. You also have the option of displaying the pictures as full size or fit to screen. If you display your pictures as full size and the picture is larger than 240x320, only part of it will be displayed. You can slide the picture around with the stylus or your finger. |

PixFrame has 2 programs. There’s a picture server that runs on your PC and a client that runs on the PPC. The advantage to this program is that you don’t need to load the pictures on your PPC and take up space. The server can pull all the pictures off your PC (or external storage). You can also use the PPC program as a stand alone slideshow program if the PPC is not in its cradle. The program is configurable on both the server and client sides. On the server side you can define how often the pictures change, if you want then displayed in order or randomly, if you want the slideshow to start when the PPC is cradled and where on the PC the pictures are stored. On the PPC side you can select if you want the picture to fit the screen or not and how the picture will be oriented. While the program is running on the PPC, you can tap the screen and get a graphic menu. The red X closes the program, the right and left arrows control the next/last picture from the PPC. The clock icon brings up the additional options screen. Conclusion: This is a great program for anyone that wants to have a ‘virtual’ photo album. I do a lot of 3D computer art, so this is a great way for me to show off my work when I’m at work. I can copy pictures to my flash drive and then point the program to my flash drive. I don’t need to tie up .5G of storage on my PPC. The PPC program supports all OS from 2002 through WM5.0. The server supports all desktop OS from 95 through XP. Vista was not listed. You will need to play around with the settings some, as the help file doesn’t fully explain all the settings. If you’re not sure if you have an interest in the program, download the trial copy and try it out. You’ll soon see just how cool this little application is. Where to buy it: 14 day trial is available at Choung.Networks. The program can be bought at Choung.Networks. |
