Do you ever wish that there was a Task Manager program included in your version of Windows Mobile? As most of you know, when you tap the close button on a program, it keeps running in the background. You can end up with lots of programs running, that you didn’t know were still running. I found Magic Button shortly after I got my first PPC and have used it every since. The problem is it only shows the running programs, it doesn’t give you any extra information. This is where acbTaskMan comes in. The program is very similar to Task Manager for Windows on your PC. acbTaskMan is highly configurable. It offers several different views of the information it tracks. The program comes in 2 flavors, a lite version for free or an advanced version for $7.95. Here’s a comparison of the lite and advanced versions. acbTaskMan - Lt (Free) - List running tasks / process
- Close processes, kill tasks
- List loaded modules
- Chart total CPU usage
- Chart power usage
- Chart network traffic
acbTaskMan - Registered ($7.95) - Show CPU, current memory, and max. memory usage for each process
- Chart CPU usage of individual process
- Log network traffic statistics to file (TCP and UDP packets sent and received)
- Subtract CPU usage of single process from total (can help isolate issues)
- Filter modules by selected process
- Filter processes by selected module
- Eliminates splash screen
Here are some screen shots of what the program can display. The first screen shows a dropdown of some options. This is where you can kill a program. The second screen shows a text description of how may threads/processes are running and how much memory is being used. The next screen shows different options that can be graphed. There are lots of display options for these graphs. The final screen shows 2 graphs stacked on top of each other. The next screen shows network statistics on top and CPU utilization on the bottom. The last screen is the setup for saving data that can be reviewed later. Conclusion: This is a great little utility. If you have ever wondered what’s going on ‘behind the screens’ of your PPC, this is program for you. Not only is this program good for the average user, I would think a developer would have a great time with it, when trying to optimize programming code. One of the advanced features is the ability to filter out the operating stats of the program itself. I highly recommend this program. I feel it goes well with other utilities such as MemMaid and Magic Button. I like to have a lot of control over my PPC and this utility helps a lot. My recommendation is to download and install the lite version and if you feel you need the extras, buy it. Availability: acbPocketSoft |
