Overview: In my continuing pursuit of good low cost or free utilities, I recently ran across a great Today plug-in by Apoxsoft. This plug-in is fairly customizable and displays information on battery charge, program memory, store memory, and storage cards. It also has an on screen brightness regulator and memory manager. The plug-in comes as either an ActiveSync install or as a .cab file. Configuration is simple after it’s been installed. Just tap and hold on any of the icons and the menu screen will come up. To add an information icon, tap add and select the item. You can select different themes (color schemes). You have 8 color schemes to chose from. By selecting the Metrix options, you can rearrange the icons. I moved the memory manager and brightness icons to the end. You can also change the size and position of what is displayed. You can tell what an icon is by tapping on it. Conclusion: This is a very good plug-in at a great price….. Free. It is limited in its scope, but it does what it’s meant to do and that’s to display system information. I found the brightness and memory managers to be nice additions to the Today screen. I did find a bug in the program though. You can add extra copies of the memory card displays, but there doesn’t seem to be a way of deleting them. You can unselect them, but the entries stay in the setup option. I tested their beta of 2.0 and found it to be ok, but not overly stable on my DELL. When I selected the DELL option for brightness control, the PPC would lock up. If you’re looking for a good, free, barebones Today screen plug-in, this is the one to pick. Give it a try.
